Hoses for uprights need to be replaced when they split. Upright vacuums typically have hoses that are stored on-board and are non-electric. They use attachments such as a floor brush, dust brush, upholstery tool or crevice tool to clean baseboards, upholstery, table tops and other surfaces near the floor surface that is being cleaned with the upright. 

Hoses for canister vacuums hold the chosen cleaning wand and attachment and are always connected to the canister. Some canister hoses are electrified to provide power for an electric powerhead.
