Who remembers the movie Coming to America

  • Who remembers the movie Coming to America

If you haven’t seen this movie, it’s spectacularly funny. Eddie Murphy, the prince of a distant African nation, is marrying a prearranged bride. On the day of his wedding, though, he convinces his father, the King, to let him “sow his royal oats” in America before committing to a life of matrimony. He lives poorly in Queens, New York working at a fast-food restaurant while trying to overcome culture shock. Then, unsurprisingly, he falls in love, but doesn’t tell the woman he is rich or his father that he has fallen in love with a “commoner.”

I won’t spoil the ending, but while the credits are rolling, Eddie Murphy lets his true comic self-shine. In a sidebar, Murphy plays BOTH the minor characters of “Clarence the Barber” and “Saul” who are telling jokes back and forth.

Saul starts telling a joke about a waiter and customer:

A man goes into a restaurant, and he sits down. He’s having a bowl of soup and he says to the waiter, “Waiter, come taste the soup.”
Waiter says, “Is something wrong with the soup?”
    “Taste the soup.”
Waiter says, “Is there something wrong with the soup? Is the soup too hot?”
    “Will you taste the soup?”
Waiter says, “What’s wrong, is the soup too cold?”
“Will you just taste the soup?!”
Waiter says, “Alright, I’ll taste the soup – where’s the spoon?”
    Aha. Aha! …

In the movie, it’s a joke that’s not very funny…which is oddly what makes it so laughable. But more than humor, there’s a lesson to Saul’s little story, one we at Quality Home Systems take to heart.

We could offer you the best intercom and central vacuum products out there – the ones with the most bells and whistles, the ones with the best warranties, the ones with the most advanced technology, the ones with the best cost options – but that don’t mean a thing if we don’t support you with installation help and operation.

That waiter could have served his customer the best bowl of soup ever. It could have been soup that earned the restaurant raving reviews or a spot in the annual Michelin guide. But you can’t do anything with soup if you don’t have the spoon with which to eat it.

At Quality Home Systems, we DO offer the best central vacuum and intercom parts but we also offer education. We teach you how to use and understand the products – and not just enough to get you by. We want to give you the “proverbial spoon” so you can enjoy what we have to offer to the fullest extent.

With Quality Homes Systems, don’t ever worry about asking too many questions. We love to teach our customers, because your happiness with our products and services means we did our job!
